Thanks for your votes on which photo you prefer! Smiley wins by a long shot. The orignal author photo will remain in the current edition of the book but I will slowly be switching over to the smiley photo for online sites. You guys may like dark stories but you like friendly faces. :)

Racquetball and ice cream

So, what do you do when you're having a once-in-a-lifetime kind of day?

Aside from the expected OMG conversations and a celebratory dinner, I played racquetball to burn off nervous energy. I was having a surreal day and was playing a great game when--BAM! The ball smacked me right on the nose (I'm fine). If it hadn't stung so much, I would have laughed. Yup. Proof that the day was real.

After the game, I had an ice cream cone. You know it's a good day when you get to eat mint chip on a cone under a summer sky.

As of the end of (re)launch day, Angelfall had a bestselling rank of #21 of all Kindle books and in the top 1,000 of all books on Amazon. And thanks to those who pointed out that Angelfall is on Amazon's homepage. Seriously. My book. On Amazon's homepage.

That's a pretty great day.

Whew! Dropping off the face of the online/email planet for months worked!

heh heh heh…

Okay, it's just us. Let's kick off our shoes and break out the ice cream! You guys are awesome. You have no idea how close I keep you with me every day, even when I'm in hiding. You give me encouragement and cheer me on when I write a good scene and tell me you'll be there whenever the second book comes out, however long that takes. Ah, thank you!

It's the other guys I had to hide from. You know, the ones who ask me about book 2 book 2 book 2 book 2 book 2 book 2 book 2… My fault, of course. I love those readers too and appreciate their enthusiasm but I have to hide from them. I should never have tried to dance around this question and should have just said from the start that it's never coming out. (Yeah, okay, it IS coming out some time in the future, although I don't know when. But shhhh—don't tell anybody, otherwise, people might ask about it again.)

Really, there are all kinds of other things we could talk about. I'm actually kind of an interesting person. Okay, I admit that I may have had a boring profile. But no more. I just updated it:

Susan Ee has eaten mezze in the old city of Jerusalem, surfed the warm waters of Costa Rica, and played her short film at a major festival. She has a life-long love of science fiction, fantasy and horror, especially if there's a touch of romance. She used to be a lawyer but loves being a writer because it allows her souped-up imagination to bust out and go feral.

See? Lots to talk about, right?

Under the Needle's Eye - FREE Today (Thurs) and Tomorrow (Friday)

As I mentioned earlier, my Clarion mates have put together an anthology, Under the Needle's Eye. It's FREE today and tomorrow only. It includes short stories and novel excerpts from the writers in our workshop (mine is a sample of Angelfall). We got together 11 years ago and spent 6 intense weeks in Seattle, improving our writing. Our anthology includes authors who've written stories that have been a finalist for the Hugo, nominated for the Nebula, listed in the Year's Best Fantasy, Year's Best Science Fiction, finalist for the Cybils' Award, and been part of an anthology that won Canada's Prix Aurora Award. It's a great group of people and I'm very fortunate to be part of the gang.

Here are some quotes from our critiquing sessions back in the day. Ah, this brings back memories:

You do a good job of working the story into the info dump.
The idea of Canada as a major power is a wonderful, fantastical notion.
I presume it was a challenge having to write in first person omniscient.
The word "wife" short-circuits the whole love-story aspect.
I ditto all the negative and insensitive comments so far.
I read this story at 2 am, and all I could think was, why don't these people just go to sleep?
Basically this is Hindus, in space, on heroin.
I just have to out myself as a former party clown.
I don't like stories that promise to tell me something and then tell me to wait — and I'll say more about that in a minute.
It takes balls to imagine you're a woman.
The first twenty-seven pages didn't really grab me at all. (This was a short story)
I thought you were brilliant, but obviously you weren't.
