Wow, this is quite the week. #1-3 YA bestsellers are the Hunger Games series. It's pretty amazing to see the cover of Angelfall just below one of my all-time favorites!

W-O-W. Greatest moment EVER. Beyond those rankings are people all over the place who are just starting to read the book. That's incredible to know.

In case it changes in the blink of an eye, I'm including a screenshot. I've been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy my whole life and it's absolutely surreal to see Angelfall ranked #1 in the bestseller list for Sci-fi & Fantasy. I'm kind of shaking right now.

Under the Needle's Eye - FREE Today (Thurs) and Tomorrow (Friday)

As I mentioned earlier, my Clarion mates have put together an anthology, Under the Needle's Eye. It's FREE today and tomorrow only. It includes short stories and novel excerpts from the writers in our workshop (mine is a sample of Angelfall). We got together 11 years ago and spent 6 intense weeks in Seattle, improving our writing. Our anthology includes authors who've written stories that have been a finalist for the Hugo, nominated for the Nebula, listed in the Year's Best Fantasy, Year's Best Science Fiction, finalist for the Cybils' Award, and been part of an anthology that won Canada's Prix Aurora Award. It's a great group of people and I'm very fortunate to be part of the gang.

Here are some quotes from our critiquing sessions back in the day. Ah, this brings back memories:

You do a good job of working the story into the info dump.
The idea of Canada as a major power is a wonderful, fantastical notion.
I presume it was a challenge having to write in first person omniscient.
The word "wife" short-circuits the whole love-story aspect.
I ditto all the negative and insensitive comments so far.
I read this story at 2 am, and all I could think was, why don't these people just go to sleep?
Basically this is Hindus, in space, on heroin.
I just have to out myself as a former party clown.
I don't like stories that promise to tell me something and then tell me to wait — and I'll say more about that in a minute.

The first twenty-seven pages didn't really grab me at all. (This was a short story)

Angelfall Paperback for Book Depository and Junglee

A lot of you have requested that the book be available on The Book Depository. It is currently making it's way across the deep, dark ocean and should land there sometime in the near future. I believe it could take as long as six weeks but I suspect it will be sooner, hopefully much sooner. I'll be checking the site regularly and will let you know when it goes live. Or, if one of you happen to see it on the site, please let me know and I'll announce it. Free shipping world-wide!

For Indian readers, Angelfall is now available on Junglee. They take international credit cards and Amazon gift certificates. The site says that it ships from USA and standard shipping is around 493 rupee and takes 18-31 business days. You might actually be better off waiting until it's available on the Bookdepository if you can buy from there.

Major Kudos to Locus Magazine and Cybils Awards

There's a wonderful review of Angelfall in Locus Magazine this month. Locus is the premier sci-fi/fantasy magazine. I didn't even know they reviewed indie books so that was a happy surprise. But it really shouldn't surprise me. Locus is a multi-Hugo award winning magazine and one of the pillars of the sci-fi/fantasy community. This vibrant and wonderful community has always been open and welcoming to new…well, everything…readers, writers, ideas, life styles. Why shouldn't they embrace the new wave of indie publications?

Having said that, I still give kudos to Locus for being one of the first (perhaps THE first) major established magazines to review an indie book. (There are other major magazines that review indie books but they charge the indie author for the  possibility of getting a review. I do not count them in the group of cutting-edge magazines who are plugged in enough to figure out what's worth recommending to their readers.)

Thank you, Locus and Gwenda Bond, who wrote the review. I feel honored.

Bond's review mentions that she discovered Angelfall through the Cybils Awards short list. She says they considered 1,289 nominations and Angelfall is the first ebook written by an indie author to ever make it as a Cybils' finalist (the print book wasn't even out yet). I had suspected this but wasn't sure until I read the review. Thanks again to the wonderful volunteers of the Cybils Award!
