W-O-W. Greatest moment EVER. Beyond those rankings are people all over the place who are just starting to read the book. That's incredible to know.

In case it changes in the blink of an eye, I'm including a screenshot. I've been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy my whole life and it's absolutely surreal to see Angelfall ranked #1 in the bestseller list for Sci-fi & Fantasy. I'm kind of shaking right now.

Nook ebook update

Thanks to those who alerted me to not being able to find Angelfall for the Nook. I've been told it should be available in a couple of days. Thanks for your patience!

[--Sept update -- Strange things are going on at BN. They had the Nook version up for a few days, then they took it down. I don't know what's going on. Their paperback version is currently $3.61 and qualifies for free shipping. So you could go that route. So sorry about the Nook snafu! Hopefully, it'll work itself out soon.--]

Racquetball and ice cream

So, what do you do when you're having a once-in-a-lifetime kind of day?

Aside from the expected OMG conversations and a celebratory dinner, I played racquetball to burn off nervous energy. I was having a surreal day and was playing a great game when--BAM! The ball smacked me right on the nose (I'm fine). If it hadn't stung so much, I would have laughed. Yup. Proof that the day was real.

After the game, I had an ice cream cone. You know it's a good day when you get to eat mint chip on a cone under a summer sky.

As of the end of (re)launch day, Angelfall had a bestselling rank of #21 of all Kindle books and in the top 1,000 of all books on Amazon. And thanks to those who pointed out that Angelfall is on Amazon's homepage. Seriously. My book. On Amazon's homepage.

That's a pretty great day.

Once in a lifetime day

Ever have one of those days when you know you'll remember it for the rest of your life? I've been having a whole year like that, thanks to all of you and your openhearted response to Angelfall. Today is a true celebration of it all.

Today, the book relaunched under my new publisher. I woke up to seeing Angelfall featured on Amazon's ebook homepage. It's incredible to see your book—the story that you spun in your head (or more accurately, in your heart), day dreaming about a life with Paige and Mom and Dee-Dum—on a major page on Amazon. To know that new readers are seeing it for the first time. To imagine them living the adventure along with the characters. To feel them connect with Penryn and Raffe and the angels.

It's amazing.

Angelfall Translations

So far, Angelfall will be translated into five languages:

German (Yay! Many Germans have requested this so I'm super excited about it)

Turkish (See the Turkish cover here)

Russian

Chinese (primarily Hong Kong and excluding mainland China)

Thai

For fun, I'm eating out and enjoying each country's food as I find out about the translations. Thai food was easy since I love it and eat it regularly. Chinese and Turkish will also be easy. It'll be interesting to find Russian and German-specific restaurants but I'm looking forward to the experience.

Which do you prefer--authorial or smiley?

Which picture do you guys like better as a profile picture? The one with the mossy background is the official author photo but the smily one might be a little more friendly to look at…

Penryn's Mother

Without spoilers, do you consider the mother a villain in her own right or a victim?

Penryn’s mother is interesting in that she takes up relatively few words in the story but seems to arouse a particular fascination for the readers. She is a multi-facetted character. At various times, she could be considered a terror, a victim, a dedicated mother, a fierce protector, and a dark shadow who looms over everything in Penryn's world even if she's not physically there in the moment. She can also be that funny person who does the odd thing that we'll never, ever understand.

Like most moms, she takes up a lot of psychological space in her daughter’s world. She has subtly and not so subtly shaped Penryn’s view of life.

I don’t consider the mother either a villain or a victim. Those descriptions are too one dimensional to describe her. I think of her as a fully formed person with a full life. Just because we see one or two aspects of her doesn’t mean she doesn’t have other facets that we might never see.

For example, Mom was also a wife at some time in her life, a school girl, a date, a daughter, a friend. Her being a paranoid schizophrenic now doesn’t change any of that. And schizophrenics aren’t born that way. It has an onset period, usually during the teen or early adult years. That means she was most likely “normal” sometime before we meet her in Angelfall.

Can you imagine what a transformation like that must be like? Anyone who goes through that kind of extreme experience deserves our respect and compassion and that’s how I hope the readers view her.

Publishers Weekly review of Angelfall

In Ee's gritty debut, which stars a heroine with backbone, angels of the apocalypse seek revenge against humans for killing the Archangel Gabriel, and street gangs have taken over Silicon Valley. Seventeen-year-old Penryn lives with (and cares for) her wheelchair-bound sister, Paige, and their paranoid schizophrenic mother. While attempting to escape their apartment to find safety, Paige is kidnapped by an angel. At the moment of the abduction, Penryn meets Raffe, an angel whose wings have been cut off by the angels who take Paige. Hoping Raffe might know where Paige is, Penryn reluctantly nurses him back to health, and the two join forces, traveling to the angels' "aerie" in San Francisco to recover Paige and repair Raffe's wings; along the way, they are captured by a dangerously anarchic army of the human resistance. Smartly conceived details (for example, there's a bounty on angel body parts, turning them into a commodity) feel fresh in this apocalyptic romance that's sustained by well-developed characters, atmosphere, and strong writing. Ee leaves plenty to discover in a planned sequel. Ages 14–up. (Aug.)
