Angelfall's editing process

The Cybils Awards panelists were curious about Angelfall's editing process because they thought it was well edited. So I thought I'd post my answer here in case any of you were interested.

Angelfall went through two rounds of beta readers and 2+ rounds of copyediting.

When I "finished" the manuscript, I sent it out to four beta readers. I revised based on their comments and then sent it out to two additional beta readers. I revised again based on the second round of feedback. That was my story editing phase. Then came the copyediting phase.

The manuscript was combed over by a volunteer who offered to copyedit. After that, I did another round of copyediting myself and one of the early pre-publication readers caught a couple of copyediting issues as well. Then the book launched to the general public. Within the first week, a couple of minor issues were pointed out by generous readers and I immediately fixed those.

So Angelfall had a team of fabulous volunteers who helped with editing and you can find them in the Acknowledgements section of the book.

Major Kudos to Locus Magazine and Cybils Awards

There's a wonderful review of Angelfall in Locus Magazine this month. Locus is the premier sci-fi/fantasy magazine. I didn't even know they reviewed indie books so that was a happy surprise. But it really shouldn't surprise me. Locus is a multi-Hugo award winning magazine and one of the pillars of the sci-fi/fantasy community. This vibrant and wonderful community has always been open and welcoming to new…well, everything…readers, writers, ideas, life styles. Why shouldn't they embrace the new wave of indie publications?

Having said that, I still give kudos to Locus for being one of the first (perhaps THE first) major established magazines to review an indie book. (There are other major magazines that review indie books but they charge the indie author for the  possibility of getting a review. I do not count them in the group of cutting-edge magazines who are plugged in enough to figure out what's worth recommending to their readers.)

Bond's review mentions that she discovered Angelfall through the Cybils Awards short list. She says they considered 1,289 nominations and Angelfall is the first ebook written by an indie author to ever make it as a Cybils' finalist (the print book wasn't even out yet). I had suspected this but wasn't sure until I read the review. Thanks again to the wonderful volunteers of the Cybils Award!

Major kudos to both Locus Magazine and Cybils for being all about the story and not about the business of publishing.

Angelfall #41 Kindle Bestseller, #1 Fantasy, #2 Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Whoa. Out of nowhere, Angelfall just hit #41 on the Kindle bestseller list.

It's currently #1 in Fantasy (not just Kindle) and #2 in Science Fiction and Fantasy (between John Carter and A Game of Thrones).

WOW. What a crazy, surreal moment. :D
