Praise for Cern Scientists

One upon a time, I was briefly part of a neutrino research group headed by Frederick Reines who received the Nobel Prize for being the first to detect the neutrino. (You didn't really think I majored in dark fantasy, did you? :)

A few days ago, Cern scientists reported that they had detected that neutrinos can go faster than the speed of light.

This is an astounding statement.

According to Einstein, nothing goes faster than the speed of light. And if it did, then TIME WOULD GO BACKWARDS.

Anyway, I'm posting this note to praise the Cern scientists for being, well, real scientists. Real scientists take data and compare them to their theories, no matter how revered those theories are. The Cern scientists are doing it right—they painstakingly tested and retested their experiments and you can bet they covered every nanometer of their procedure before putting it out there for the rest of the scientific community to scrutinize. As far as I can tell, they are NOT making outlandish statements to use sensationalism to get more funding; they did NOT race to publish embryonic findings to ensure no one else took the credit; and they did NOT bury and ignore their data just because it goes against one of the most celebrated scientific theories. They simply put their data out there (data that even they had a hard time believing) for the community to either replicate or identify the mistake. As simple as it sounds, this takes GUTS.

This is true science done by true scientists for the purpose of benefiting humanity and our understanding of the universe. Regardless of the final outcome of this announcement, here's to Dr. Antonio Ereditato and his team working on OPERA. Cheers to you for reminding the public and the scientific community how science is supposed to be performed.

Brainstorming on the fridge

I pulled the refrigerator out from the wall so that the metal side is exposed. I have two poster boards stuck there by magnets. I keep drifting over to the refrigerator to brainstorm on Book 2.

I have magnets holding the paper but they're weak and the boards keep sliding out of place. So I've been on a mission to get super-strong magnets. It's hard to find them in regular stores. Turns out I have a friend who will let me borrow his curiously strong magnets. I swear they're industrial strength. He warned me not to pinch my fingers between two of his magnets.

So if you feel your jewelry being pulled in a westerly direction, don't worry. It's just me brainstorming. :)

Okay, sorry I'm a little behind on the reviews, but this one is worth mentioning. Sift Book Reviews reviews indie-published books. Sarah, the reviewer, says that Angelfall is the first indie-published book that she can say with "100% confidence" that "This book is as good or better than those published by a major house."
